Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions Answered

Every person is different and it depends on your age and skin type. Paler skin (Type 1) will take longer to tan & has a higher risk of burning. Darker skin (Type 4) tans faster with less chance of burning.

Please check your skin type. As our skin gets older it also tans faster because it has become more conditioned to UV light Sample Description

You should always start your sessions low, around 4 minutes until you achieve a base tan. People of Skin Type 1 are high risk and may have to do shorter sessions with caution, or use a spray tan.

Once a base tan is achieved people of other Skin Types may increase sessions to 2-3 per week, always allowing at least 24 hours between session. You should avoid burning and seek advice if you experience negative effects. The European Standard advises not to exceed 60 sessions per year. Once a base tan is achieved you may increase your session time according to your ability to tan without burning. Some people can increase times whilst others cannot.

The key is to avoid burning and damaging skin. To build tan colour we would advise more sessions of lower minutes rather than fewer sessions of higher minutes which increases the risk of burning and allows the tan to fade. Never sunbathe outside on the same day as using a sunbed and always use the eye protection available.
Yes! Accelerators increase the production of melanin which is essential for the skin to tan. Without accelerators your skin takes longer to produce the melanin.

They also help to nourish and moisturise skin to extend the life of your tan, and help to absorb more of the UV light. Skin is highly reflective and can reflect up to 40% of the light off the body.
This has never been definitively proven. Studies have shown that malignant melanoma is more prevalent on parts of the body not normally exposed to sunlight, suggesting that these are the areas that have to deal with intermittent over exposure and are at most risk. It is therefore important to reduce the risk of over-exposure. However, this is as true of sunlight and using sunbeds.

Outdoor tanning exposes the body to different levels of UV in an uncontrolled way, and using sunscreen is only effective when used properly. Recent studies have shown that sunscreen does not provide the protection we expect because we don't use enough often enough. It follows that the use of a sunbed, in moderation, can be safer than tanning outdoors because the exposure can be controlled.

UV light has many essential health benefits, for our bodies and mental health too. In fact we need it to survive. Over exposure can be detrimental to health including contributing to skin cancer if it is abused. To stay safe never over use a sunbed and never burn, just as in daylight.

Check your skin regularly and if you notice any changes consult your GP.
You should not use a sunbed if:

Are under 18 You are pregnant Have fair, sensitive skin that burns easily or tans poorly Have a history of sunburn, particularly in childhood Have a large number of freckles and/or moles Are taking medicines or using creams that sensitise the skin to sunlight Have a medical condition that is worsened by sunlight Or anyone in your family has had skin cancer in the past Already have extensive skin damage due to sunlight If you are unsure you should consult your GP.
To prolong your tan keep your skin supple and moisturised. Your skin is constantly renewing and shedding, dry skin more so. Do not apply moisturiser just before your session; this makes the skin highly reflective. Use an accelerator instead.
Double Dip tanning is the use of a sunbed session immediately before a spray tan. The UV light warms the skin and opens the pores allowing the spray solution to soak further into the skin.

The heat, increased blood flow and melanin combines with the spray solution to create an even better looking, faster tan.

It can also refer to using a Sunbed, and tanning outdoors on the same day, which you should not do.
Yes of course. We have many sunbed block 'courses', each one designed to give value for money and convenience. For more information please see our Courses.
No, sunbeds are restricted to over 18 only. This was made law in 2012, although we have always had a policy of No Under 18s, in line with our policy of Responsible Tanning. If you are lucky enough to look younger than your years please do not be offended if we ask for proof of age.
Yes. UV light is essential to good skin condition and small doses from a sunbed can help with many skin conditions including psoriasis and eczema. We have many customers that have weekly sessions purely for the benefit of improving skin, and some have even been referred for 'uv treatment' by their GP's.
Vitamin D is essential to human health. Medical studies around the world have proven the benefits of Vitamin D for:

Cellular health inc breast, colon and prostrate cancer. Bone health inc osteoporosis and arthritis. Organ health inc high blood pressure & heart disease. Auto Immune Diseases inc Multiple Sclerosis and Diabetes. Mental health inc SAD, PMS and depression.

The UK has been shown to be borderline Vitamin D deficient because of the lack of sunlight. Other countries with less sunlight than the UK such as Scandinavia, are not as deficient in Vitamin D because they eat a healthier diet to supplement vitamin requirements. However, it is very difficult to eat enough to maintain the required amount of vitamin D we need. Sunlight is the most efficient way for the body to produce Vitamin D, yet in the UK the sun is only strong enough between May-October, and depends on the number of days we actually get sunshine on a weekend when we are not at work.

Professor Dr Michael Holick, (Medicine, Physiology & Biochemestry, Boston University) has recommended a minimum daily amount of 1000 UI to maintain healthy levels, though unprotected UV exposure. This equals around 5 minutes of exposure around 2-3 times per week depending on skin type. "Unprotected" for clarification means without the use of SPF cream which reduce the ability to produce Vitamin D from the sun by up to 97%.

We need Vitamin D to be healthy, to feel better physically and mentally, and the best way to get it is through controlled unprotected exposure to UV.
No. They contain SPF which blocks UV light and therefore are counter productive. You should use one for outdoor tanning but not for indoor tanning.

They also damage our sunbed acrylics because of the ingredients in them.

Health and Safety

Be Sensible And Be Safe

Based on European Guideline advice, you should not use tanning equipment if you:

Are under 18
You are pregnant
Have fair, sensitive skin that burns easily or tans poorly, or are particularly sensitive to sunlight
Have a history of sunburn, particularly in childhood
Have a large number of freckles and/or moles
Are taking medicines or using creams that sensitises the skin to sunlight
Have a medical condition that is worsened by sunlight
Anyone in your family has had skin cancer in the past
Already have extensive skin damage due to sunlight

Points you should consider

Premature Ageing of Skin. In the long term, over tanning can age skin. Overusing tanning equipment can cause sunburn. Burning the skin can double your risk of skin cancer in the future.

Protect Your Eyes. Always use suitable goggles to avoid irritation or conjunctivitis, and cataracts in the long term.General Health. Make sure you are medically fit and that you are not taking any medication that could increase the sensitivity of your skin to UV light.

Skin Type. Check your skin type and tell staff about your normal reaction to sunlight. Always ensure that you avoid burning.

Check Your Skin. Consult your GP if you notice any abnormal reactions during or after your session, and if you notice any unusual skin growths or change in size or colour of a mole that occurs over weeks or months.

Stay Safe. Make sure you understand how to use the equipment and how to locate the emergency button. Clean the equipment before use.

Protect Your Skin In Sunlight. A tan obtained from UV tanning equipment does not protect you from the effects of sunlight. Always protect your skin from excessive exposure to the sun.
